ICANN Approves Plan for New Domain Names

IT PINOYs and the rest of the web world now have a chance to use a more generic domains, with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approving use the use of more generic top-level domains (gTLDs).

currently, there are 22 gTLDs (e.g. .com, .org, .net), and with the newly approved a plan people and organizations can now apply for more generic gTLDs like “.car,” “itpinoy,” or “computer.”

“ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind,” said Rod Beckstrom, president and CEO of ICANN.

unleashing this global human imagination however doesn’t come cheap as applicants need to pay a $185k evaluation fee with $5k upfront and might pay even more for specialized cases.
