Wolfram|Alpha – The Google Killer?

touted by some as the newest Google killer, Wolfram|Alpha is all set to prove this by may ’09.

Stephen Wolfram, a scientist, inventor, author and a business leader narrates this in his blog, “Fifty years ago, when computers were young, people assumed that they’d quickly be able to handle all these kinds of things.
And that one would be able to ask a computer any factual question, and have it compute the answer. But it didn’t work out that way. Computers have been able to do many remarkable and unexpected things. But not that. I’d always thought, though, that eventually it should be possible. And a few years ago, I realized that I was finally in a position to try to do it.”

so what makes Wolfram|Alpha different from Google? Wolfram|Alpha boasts of a new search algorithm that makes data on the web “computable.” so if you try to search, “How many islands are there in the Philippines?” it’s algorithm will represent your query in numbers and give you the best answer. unlike Google which will use the entered query as keywords for searching, Wolfram|Alpha claims to understand your search and give you the “paired” answer to your question! hmmm

now if it would reply with, “High tide? or Low tide?” to my above query, Wolfram|Alpha will get my nod. haha!
