IT PINOYs might have been amazed with how the two major (warring!) networks brought the recent Philippine Automated National Elections yesterday with the use of “virtual presence” and “hologram” technologies.
in the last days before the election, GMA-7 boasted of it’s expensive set and eventually surprised everyone with it’s hologram effect of reporting (it looked like a scene from star wars!). well, this wasn’t really new as CNN used the same technology in the 2008’s US election and was actually based on a chroma-key technology that’s been taken “to the Nth degree.”
chroma-key is a technique for mixing two images or frames together, in which a color from one image is removed (or made transparent), revealing another image behind it. this technology is commonly used for weather forecast broadcasts, wherein the presenter appears to be standing in front of a large map, but in the studio it is actually a large blue or green background.
ABS-CBN 2 on the other hand used a technology called “virtual presence.” Joel Lamdani, vice president of Orad Hi-Tech Systems Ltd., explained that virtual presence is a feature of an advanced technology called Augmented Reality (AR), which blurs the line between what’s real and what’s computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell.
unlike GMA-7s hologram, which was taken from an adjacent room, ABS-CBN 2’s virtual presence was taken on a live field report, which was way kewler!!
ABS-CBN 2 also had a gigantic touch screen and a “war room” that looked like those we see in big hollywood movies like “Armageddon” and “Apollo 13.”
like how Comelec succeeded with automating our national elections, these new innovations are definitely a treat for all IT PINOYs as finally we have these technologies on our local tv’s. thought there’s still more cleanup to do (compared with CNN’s hologram) nonetheless, kudos to both stations for bringing their news reports to the next level – world-class!!!

First I congratulate ABS-CBN for an admiring, well planned, accurate and high technologically oriented election coverage last May 10 2010. C'mon guys… Let us all admit, Philippines is one the countries to adapt technology in late. But the mere fact that the 2 networks introduce that “kind” was a great job for both! But the main issue is that, “what was the reality behind virtual presence versus hologram that ABS-CBN and GMA used?” People must understand why IT people or non IT people criticized or even corrected GMA for the terminology since they are trying to give people the “precise information” which exist do today.It's not bad to debate such things and it's not even being “mababaw” as Filipinos to discussed this kind of issue because this is a big thing! And it's such ashamed if we got being reported by people from other countries for disinformation with regard to the terminology. well, it wasn't bias at all..years in field reporting will test the credibility of a network.. all the big networks used touch-screen technology, the questions are, which network used it more often?which network has the biggest touch-screen? =)one more thing, GMA has been very insecure with ABS-CBN's achievement locally and internationally..the technology they (GMA) used was not hologram..it was chroma-key..they were seen setting up the green screen..by the way, when we use hologram, we can see shadow of the person we are talking to..and as i have seen it, while mike was talking to a reporter, it has no SHADOW..therefore, it might be virtual presence or chroma-key..
ABS-CBN used large touch screen. kasing laki ng tao. 150+ inch ung sa gma 50 inch lng yata. tsaka mas advance yung tech ng ABS kahit igalaw mo yung cam hindi sumusunod yung image. ung sa GMA nagalaw ng camera man yung live feed ng cam sumunod ung image. sa ABS kahit i zoomin mo sa reporter or izoom in mo sa anchor hindi sumusunod ung image. tsaka hindi maasikaso. ung sa GMA kailangan pa nila mag tayo ng green tent or blue tent para magamit lang yung hologram holograman nila na chrome key lamang… tzka ung VZRT made in china pa yata.

Nakakatulong din ang mga ratings kasi kapag may mga competition eh mas nag-i-improve ang mga stations. Mudslinging o batuhan ng putik, natural na yan sa pulitika, pati na rin sa tv networks. Naalala ko yung dating company na pinapasukan ko, sabi nya “ako lang ang may ganitong benefits na binibigay sa tao, ako ang number 1 sa lahat ng industrial companies sa philippines, etc.”, pero sa isip ko “ang dami kaya sir na mas maganda pang kumpanya”. hehe! Ganyan sa mga rivals, sasabihin ng team A “we're number one, we're number one!” Sasagot naman ang team B “Liar, liar, pants on fire!” hehe! Basta walang pikunan kasi para walang away. Kung sabi ng isa na sila lang ang may technology na ganun eh ang sagot lang dun eh “hindi kaya, kaya din namin yan, ang tech namin ay mas maganda”, in that way maganda ang batuhan ng sagot. Kasi kung sasabihan mo pa ng “nandadaya kayo, mga sinungaling” eh magkakasamaan lang ng loob. Opinion ko lang naman yun. Kahit mababa pa ang rating ng isang channel pero nandun yung panunuorin kong palabas eh dun ako manunuod, wala akong pakialam kung sino ang number 1. Tawagin man nilang hologram, hologram effect, or virtual presence, para sa akin eh isa lamang itong camera tricks.
This comparing of technology is stupid!.. It is not important on what technology the two stations used but what is important is that they were able to deliver the news clearly!.. We Filipinos want change but look how the two stations are doing? a never ending “pasikat” to each other!.. Do you consider them as a role model for peace? tsk.tsk. we as a citizen or a viewer should not compare the technology that they used. instead we must be happy that the Philippine media/news is taking an effort to enhance the way they deliver news!. and this is a great leap for a new stage of technology in the PHILIPPINES!..

It's fake.. I tried researching about it back in college and was planning to use it for my team's thesis, sadly, it's so advanced that there are only a few countries on that frontier. As it seems, Japan is on the lead and they've still got a long way to go. And they wont just let that technology slip onto other's hands.. What they did was just a bunch of camera tricks used in movies that's all. It's also true about Noynoy's shots with a chroma screen in the backgroud. The reason for the green chroma is because a person don't have green in his/her body, making it easy to crop the image/video record and placing it with a new background. Much like adobe photoshop. So yung ginawa ni Mike Enriquez na kausap niya harapan yung mga reporters and Noynoy, its just like weather forecast. Kunwari paturo-turo, pero wala siyang nakikitang image sa harapan niya just a television in front of him, not seen on your tv of course, and trying to interact THROUGH it. And on the issue of being number one, well its just simple. When you say you're number one, people are more likely to watch you, just psychology, unless youre a specific diehard. The more who watch you, the more a product company will pay millions to have their products endorsed between your programs (the more popular the program the higher the cost of advertising your product) because thats the way tv stations earn money because you are receiving it freely, unless you're on cable, cable satellite or abroad.Actually, the whole point is not about this thread being biased to a station or who has better technology.. That's just part of it.. It only means that a lot of people, including some of the people here, have been dooped by GMA claiming to have technology that is still being researched and protected by those who has it.So for those on the side of GMA, on the matter of hologram issue only, make sure they are telling the truth before you start campaigning on their side. But on who's the better news team, well that's subject to a huge debate as both stations have their stregths and weaknesses.
Siguro hindi naman intensyon ng ABS-CBN na maging pang-basag trip sa hologram effects ng GMA7 kaya lang ang hologram kasi are projected into space para yung image nakikita mo without a screen or anything. Ska bakit maiinggit ang ABS sa GMA e ang taas nga ng ratings nila nitong halalan 2010 kc sila makamasa..at kahit mayayaman o middle class nanonood sa knila..Di tulad sa Gma puro kayabangan ang alam,lagi nagmamalaki at lagi nagpaparinig lalo na si MIke Ilongriquez At Mel Chinangko..kya siguro nabwisit na sa kanila ang ABS-CBN..at nakakabwisit tlaga sila panoorin..akala mo ang tatalino pero tatanga-tanga naman pla..lalo n ng si mel ang gumamit ng touchscreen..halatang halatang naghihintay ng signal…lol..
huuu. pareho lang peke iyang dalawang istasyon na iyan. parehong cut and paste “technology” ang ginagamit. tawa kami nung nagmulto si pacquiao. wala na iyung “hologram” niya, nagsasalita pa rin. tsaka pareho nilang di nakikita iyung kausap nila. mga nakatingin sa monitor. putangina! ang tagal na tayong niloloko ng dos at siyete. kahit anong basura na ibigay nila, papatulan niyo!!!!!!

As a matter of fact, parang wala nga akong narinig na effect after hologram.. But as I regularly switching channels hindi ako sure. Remember nung kausap ni Mike Enriquez si Noynoy? Well he is urging Noy to even wave his hands para maipakita sa mga nanonood na hologram nga talaga. So dalawa lang yan, super implying na hologram or disinformation. Why? Implying kasi pinapawagayway yung kamay, disinformation kasi pinagpipilitan na lang kasi napahiya na. Baka maniwala pa akong hologram yun kung may mga hardware silang inilagay beneath kung saan nila pinalalabas yung hologram-kuno. Pero sahig lang talaga. Buti sana kung nageemit ng sari saring ilaw yung sahig.. Wala! Katakot takot na processing ng light spectrum ang involved sa hologram tapos sahig lang…
