Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., a Filipino Senator and a great critic of then President Ferdinand Marcos, was assassinated today 28yrs ago.
along with Gerry Roxas and Jovito Salonga, Ninoy formed the opposition to the Marcos regime. and in 1973 he was arrested and incarcerated for 7yrs, but was allowed to depart for the United States to seek medical treatment after he suffered a heart attack in 1980. Upon arriving the the Manila International Airport in August 21, 1983, he was executed.
his death marked the rise of the free Filipinos via the People Power and catapulted his widow, Corazon Aquino as the new Philippine President thus ending the 20yr Marcos regime.
